Sometimes life does not unfold the way we expected it to. Many of us carry quiet plans in our hearts about how our lives should look—where we will work, what our routines will be, and the direction we imagine our future taking. We build these pictures over time, and when life moves in a different direction, it can feel confusing or even frustrating. Yet the Bible reminds us that our plans are not the final authority over our lives. Proverbs 16:9 (CSB) says, “A person’s heart plans his way, but the Lord determines his steps.” While we may envision one path, God often guides us toward another, one that fits the purpose He designed specifically for us.

The name Yahweh carries a powerful meaning that helps us understand why God’s direction can be trusted. Yahweh is the personal name of God revealed in Scripture, rooted in the moment when God spoke to Moses at the burning bush and declared, “I AM WHO I AM” (Exodus 3:14). This name speaks of the One who is eternal, self-existing, and completely sovereign. Yahweh does not rely on human understanding or timing. He sees the beginning and the end of every story at the same time. When we say Yahweh, we are acknowledging the God who knows every detail of our lives and sustains all things.
Because Yahweh sees beyond what we can see, His plans are often different from our own. The Bible explains this clearly in Isaiah 55:8–9 (CSB): “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, and your ways are not my ways… For as heaven is higher than earth, so my ways are higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” In other words, God is not limited by the perspective we have in the moment. What looks like a detour to us may actually be the road that leads us exactly where we need to go.
This truth becomes clearer as we walk with God over time. Many people can look back and see moments where the life they planned would not have supported the life God ultimately gave them. What we once thought we wanted may not have been what we truly needed. Yet Yahweh, who knows us completely, directs our steps with wisdom and care. Philippians 4:19 (CSB) reminds us that “my God will supply all your needs according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.” God’s provision is not always shaped by our expectations; instead, it is shaped by His understanding of what will sustain us and help us fulfill the purpose He placed within us.
It is also comforting to remember that Yahweh hears us when we speak to Him. When we pray, cry out, or wrestle with questions about our lives, our words do not disappear into silence. Psalm 34:17 (CSB) says, “The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears, and rescues them from all their troubles.” God hears our prayers even when the answers unfold differently than we hoped. His response may come through Scripture, through circumstances, or through a quiet realization in our hearts that His guidance is leading us somewhere meaningful.
When we begin to see life through this perspective, our frustrations can slowly transform into trust. Instead of believing that our lives have gone off course, we can recognize that Yahweh has been guiding us all along. He is the God who formed us, who understands our calling, and who leads us toward the life that best fits the purpose He created us to live.
So if you ever find yourself wondering why your life did not unfold the way you expected, remember this simple truth: Yahweh’s way is always the better way. The plans we make may feel certain at the time, but the path God designs carries wisdom, provision, and purpose that we could never fully arrange on our own. When we trust the One who calls Himself I AM, we place our lives in the hands of the God who sees every step ahead and lovingly leads us toward exactly what we need.
