The God Who Answers by Fire

Key Scriptures

“Then Elijah approached all the people and said, ‘How long will you waver between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow Him. But if Baal, follow him.’ But the people didn’t answer him a word.”

1 Kings 18:37–38 (CSB)
“‘Answer me, Lord, answer me, so that this people will know that You, the Lord, are God and that You have turned their hearts back.’ Then the Lord’s fire fell and consumed the burnt offering, the wood, the stones, and the dust, and it licked up the water that was in the trench.”

1 Kings 18:39 (CSB)
“When all the people saw it, they fell facedown and said, ‘The Lord, He is God! The Lord, He is God!’”

1 Kings 18:44 (CSB)
“The seventh time, the servant reported, ‘There’s a cloud as small as a man’s hand coming up from the sea.’ Then Elijah said, ‘Go and tell Ahab, “Get your chariot ready and go down so the rain doesn’t stop you.”’”

James 5:17–18 (CSB)
“Elijah was a human being as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and for three years and six months it did not rain on the land. Then he prayed again, and the sky gave rain and the land produced its fruit.”

Reflection Questions

What “altars” in my life need to be rebuilt so God’s fire can fall again?

Have I been wavering between faith and fear, or between truth and compromise?

How can I stand in bold obedience even when it feels like I’m alone?

What does “the sound of rain” mean prophetically in my current season?
