Bible Study Along: 1 Samuel 5

“God Will Defend His Own Glory”

Theme:

God does not need anyone to defend Him. His presence carries power, and every idol must fall before Him.

Read the Chapter: 1 Samuel 5 (CSB)

Take your time reading the chapter slowly. Picture the scene: the Ark of God in enemy territory, Dagon falling, and God’s glory on display.

Section 1: The Ark in Dagon’s Temple (Verses 1–2)

Key Verse: “After the Philistines captured the ark of God, they took it from Ebenezer to Ashdod, brought it into the temple of Dagon, and placed it next to his statue.”

The Philistines thought they had “captured” Israel’s God.

They placed the Ark beside their idol, Dagon, as a sign of victory.

 Reflection Question:
Have I ever acted like I could “control” or “contain” God instead of honoring His holiness?

Section 2: Dagon Falls Before the Lord (Verses 3–5)

Key Verse: “When they got up early the next morning, there was Dagon, fallen with his face to the ground before the ark of the Lord.”

Day 1: Dagon fell on his face.

Day 2: Dagon was shattered—head and hands cut off.

Prophetic Picture: No idol can stand against the presence of the Lord.

Reflection Question:
What “Dagons” in my life need to fall—habits, idols, or things I’ve placed above God?

Section 3: The Hand of the Lord in Philistine Cities (Verses 6–12)

Key Verse: “The Lord’s hand was heavy on the people of Ashdod… He terrified the people and struck them with tumors.”

Judgment follows the Ark wherever it goes.

God demonstrates that His glory is not a trophy—it is holy.

Philistines realize the Ark is too weighty for them to handle.

Reflection Question:
What happens when God’s presence is mishandled or taken lightly in our lives or churches?

Prayer Prompt:

Lord, I honor Your presence. Forgive me for any area where I’ve treated You lightly or allowed idols to take Your place. Let every “Dagon” in my life fall. Teach me to carry Your glory with reverence and obedience. Amen.

Journal Prompts:

What idols (big or small) might be competing with God in my heart?

How has God defended His glory in my life before?

What does it look like for me to host His presence with honor every day?

How can I remove “symbols without surrender” from my walk and pursue real relationship with God?

Key Takeaway:

God does not need our help to defend His glory. When His presence enters a space, every idol will fall, and His power will make it clear that He alone is Lord.
