Bible Study Outline – 1 Samuel 22

God is Still Working in the Cave

David in the Cave of Adullam (vv. 1–2)

David flees and hides in a cave.

He is joined by men who are distressed, in debt, or discontented.

David becomes their leader in a dark place.
Lesson: God often sends people to us in the cave seasons. He develops leadership in us during hidden places.

David Protects His Family (vv. 3–4)

David seeks refuge for his parents with the king of Moab.

He is still caring for his family, even while on the run.
Lesson: True character is revealed in hardship. Even in chaos, David honors family responsibility.

The Prophet’s Instruction (v. 5)

Gad the prophet tells David to leave the stronghold and return to Judah.

David obeys, even though it may not feel safe.
Lesson: Obedience to God’s word > personal comfort. God will sometimes call us out of hiding to walk by faith.

Saul’s Paranoia and Doeg’s Betrayal (vv. 6–19)

Saul rages against David and accuses his men of conspiracy.

Doeg the Edomite betrays the priests of Nob, leading to their massacre.
Lesson: Fear and paranoia open the door to cruelty. Betrayal often comes from those close by.

Abiathar Joins David (vv. 20–23)

Abiathar escapes and brings the ephod (symbol of God’s presence and guidance) to David.

David promises him protection.
Lesson: Even in loss, God sends divine connections and tools for the next season.
