ARISE Bible Breakdown: Hannah, Samuel, and the Vow
Theme: Birthing purpose requires surrender, pain, and a willingness to give it back.
Scriptures: 1 Samuel 1:9–28 (CSB)
Psalm 34:18, Proverbs 16:3, Galatians 6:9, Ephesians 3:20–21 (CSB)
KEY PASSAGE
1 Samuel 1:10–11 (CSB)
“Deeply hurt, Hannah prayed to the Lord and wept with many tears. Making a vow, she pleaded, ‘Lord of Armies, if you will take notice of your servant’s affliction... I will give him to the Lord all the days of his life, and his hair will never be cut.’”
STUDY INSIGHT
Hannah wasn’t just asking for a child—she was offering a legacy. Her prayer didn’t come from a casual place. It came from deep pain, long waiting, and full surrender.
God honored her prayer, and her vow became a doorway for prophetic purpose. Her son, Samuel, would grow up to be a prophet who anointed kings and guided a nation.
Hannah’s story shows us:
Pain can be a pathway to purpose
True surrender gives God ownership of the outcome
Your “yes” to God can birth something that impacts generations
KEY THEMES
Pain invites God’s presence. (Psalm 34:18)
What you commit to God, He establishes. (Proverbs 16:3)
Don’t grow weary in your waiting. (Galatians 6:9)
God will do more than you ask or imagine. (Ephesians 3:20)
REFLECTION QUESTIONS
Have I truly surrendered the things I’ve prayed for?
What is God asking me to dedicate back to Him in this season?
How do I respond when it feels like my prayers are going unanswered?
Could my current pain or waiting be preparation for something greater?
Do I trust God not just with the blessing—but with what happens after He gives it?
DECLARATION
“I will not grow weary. I will wait well. I will pray boldly. I will surrender completely. God is birthing something through me that is greater than what I can see right now. My pain has purpose, and my promise belongs to the Lord.”
JOURNAL PROMPT
Write a letter to God today about something you’ve prayed for that hasn’t come to pass yet. Be honest. Pour out your heart like Hannah did.
Then write the words: “If You give it to me, I’ll give it back.”
List what giving it back would look like practically—emotionally, spiritually, and in faith.
