Day 10: The Focus Fast

Day 10: The Focus Fast

The Churches in Sardis, Philadelphia, and Laodicea

In Revelation 3, Jesus speaks to three churches: Sardis, Philadelphia, and Laodicea. Each message includes praise, criticism, a command, and a promise. This guide breaks down the lessons from these churches and encourages self-reflection.

1. The Church in Sardis (Revelation 3:1-6)

  • Praise:
Jesus praised the few who remained faithful and "had not soiled their clothes," declaring them worthy to walk with Him in purity.
  • Criticism:
They were spiritually dead despite their reputation for being alive. Their deeds were incomplete before God.
  • Command:
    • Wake up and strengthen what remains.
    • Remember what you have received and heard.
    • Hold it fast and repent.
  • Promise:
    • Victors will wear white robes of purity.
    • Their names will never be erased from the book of life.
    • Jesus will acknowledge their names before God and His angels.

2. The Church in Philadelphia (Revelation 3:7-13)

  • Praise:
They kept God’s word and did not deny His name, even with little strength. They endured opposition faithfully.
  • Criticism:
    None. Philadelphia received no rebuke.
  • Command:
    • Hold on to what you have so that no one takes your crown.
  • Promise:
    • Victors will become pillars in God’s temple.
    • God will write His name, the name of His city (New Jerusalem), and Jesus’ new name on them.

3. The Church in Laodicea (Revelation 3:14-22)

  • Praise:
None. Jesus found nothing commendable in this church.
  • Criticism:
They were lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—and spiritually complacent. They thought they were rich but were spiritually poor, blind, and naked.
  • Command:
    • Be earnest and repent.
    • Seek spiritual riches (refined gold), righteousness (white garments), and spiritual vision (salve for their eyes).
    • Open the door to Jesus, who is knocking.
  • Promise:
    • Victors will sit with Jesus on His throne, just as He overcame and sits with His Father.

Reflection Questions

  1. Sardis: Is your faith vibrant and alive, or are you spiritually asleep? How can you strengthen your connection to God?
  2. Philadelphia: How do you remain faithful to God in the face of trials? What does patient endurance look like for you?
  3. Laodicea: Have you become lukewarm in your relationship with God? How can you reignite your passion for Jesus?

Action Steps

  1. Examine your spiritual condition. Are there areas where you need to wake up, endure, or rekindle your faith?
  2. Repent of any complacency and ask God for a fresh vision of His purpose for your life.
  3. Keep Jesus at the center of your heart, listening for His voice and responding to His call.

Memory Verse

"Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me."
Revelation 3:20

Key Takeaways

  • Sardis: Spiritual reputation isn’t enough; faith must be active and alive.
  • Philadelphia: Even in weakness, faithfulness brings great reward.
  • Laodicea: Lukewarm faith is dangerous, but repentance and renewal are always available.
