Day 9: The FOCUS Fast

Revelation 2: The Churches

Exploring the Messages to the Churches

Introduction

In Revelation 2, Jesus gives specific messages to four of the seven churches. Each message is unique, showing what they did well, where they needed to improve, and how they could be faithful to God. Through these messages, we learn important lessons about our own relationship with God.

Key Themes

  1. God’s Praise: What they were doing right.
  2. God’s Criticism: Where they needed to change.
  3. God’s Command: What they should do next.
  4. God’s Promise: The reward for staying faithful.

The Four Churches

1. Ephesus (Revelation 2:1-7)

  • Praise: Hard work, perseverance, and intolerance of wickedness. They tested false apostles and hated the practices of the Nicolaitans.
  • Criticism: They had lost their first love—their passionate devotion to God.
  • Command: Repent and return to their first love. Otherwise, their lampstand (influence) would be removed.
  • Promise: Victors will eat from the tree of life in God’s paradise.

2. Smyrna (Revelation 2:8-11)

  • Praise: They endured afflictions, poverty (yet were spiritually rich), and slander.
  • Criticism: None. Smyrna was a faithful church.
  • Command: Do not fear upcoming suffering. Be faithful, even to the point of death.
  • Promise: Victors will receive the crown of life and will not face the second death.

3. Pergamum (Revelation 2:12-17)

  • Praise: They stayed true to God’s name and did not renounce their faith, even during persecution.
  • Criticism: Some followed the sinful teachings of Balaam and the Nicolaitans, leading to idolatry and immorality.
  • Command: Repent, or Jesus will come and fight against them with the sword of His mouth (His Word).
  • Promise: Victors will receive hidden manna (spiritual nourishment) and a white stone with a new name only they will know.

4. Thyatira (Revelation 2:18-29)

  • Praise: Their deeds, love, faith, service, perseverance, and spiritual growth.
  • Criticism: They tolerated Jezebel, a false teacher who led others into immorality and idolatry.
  • Command: Repent of these sins. Those who had not followed Jezebel’s ways were to hold on to their faith until Jesus comes.
  • Promise: Victors will have authority over nations and receive the morning star (Jesus Himself).

Reflection Questions

  1. Ephesus: Have you ever felt like your love for God isn’t as strong as it used to be? How can you reignite it?
  2. Smyrna: How do you stay faithful to God even when life is hard or unfair?
  3. Pergamum: Are there things in your life that might lead you away from God? How can you avoid them?
  4. Thyatira: How can you stand firm in your faith even when others around you are not living for God?

Key Takeaways

  • Jesus knows everything about our lives—our strengths, struggles, and where we need to grow.
  • God calls us to repent and stay faithful, even when it’s difficult.
  • He promises incredible rewards for those who are victorious in their faith.
