Day Seven: The FOCUS Fast

Day Seven: The FOCUS Fast

Who Do You Bow To?

Today’s focus is on standing up for our faith, just like Daniel did. In Daniel 6, we read how he was faced with a tough choice: obey a new law that went against his beliefs, or stay faithful to God. Even though he knew the consequences, Daniel chose to obey God, trusting Him no matter what.

This ties into what Jesus tells us in Matthew 10:28: “Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.” Jesus reminds us to put our faith in God, not in what other people say or do.

Key Verses

  • Matthew 10:28: "Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell."
  • Daniel 6: The story of Daniel being thrown into the lions’ den because he stayed faithful to God, even when it was dangerous.

Reflection Questions

1. Who or What Do You Fear?
Jesus tells us that our faith in God should be stronger than any fear of what people might think or do. Daniel shows us this by standing up for what he believes in, even though he knew it could get him into serious trouble.

Think about these questions:

  • Are there times when you feel pressured to do something that doesn’t line up with your beliefs?
  • Are you worried about what others think or say about you?

2. Building Strength in Your “Secret Place”
Daniel’s courage came from his habit of praying and connecting with God regularly. Even when he knew it was risky, Daniel prayed three times a day, finding strength in his private relationship with God. Jesus teaches us that private time with God is important for growing stronger in our faith (Matthew 6:6).

Ask yourself:

  • How can you make time each day to pray and spend time with God, like Daniel did?
  • Are there situations where you need God’s strength and peace? How can time with God help you feel ready to face them?

3. Trusting God’s Protection
In Daniel’s story, we see how God’s power kept him safe. When Daniel was thrown into the lions’ den, God protected him by shutting the lions’ mouths. Jesus’ teaching in Matthew 10:28 reminds us that our ultimate safety is in God’s hands, no matter what happens around us. The “lions” we face today could be fears, worries, or pressures—but God is always with us.

Think about:

  • What are some “lions” you face—situations, fears, or challenges that feel big and hard to handle?
  • How does knowing that God is with you help you face these situations?

Practical Steps

1. Clear Out Distractions
Think about any “idols” in your life—things that might take your attention away from God. Are there activities, worries, or even people’s opinions that you’re “bowing” to instead of God? Ask God to show you anything you need to remove so you can be more focused on Him.

2. Start a Prayer Routine
Just like Daniel prayed three times a day, make a goal to pray regularly. Even if it’s just a few minutes, find a time that works for you to check in with God and ask for His help and guidance.

3. Choose Faith Over Fear
God has a plan for you, but it requires your trust and obedience. Choose to follow Him and let go of the fear of what others think or say. Remember, God is more powerful than anything we might face.
