Welcome to Day Two of The Focus Fast:
Bible Study on Exodus 20 – The Ten Commandments
Today, as you read Exodus 20, take some time to think about the Ten Commandments. Reflect on how you have—or maybe haven’t—followed them in your daily life. Talk to God honestly about these areas, asking Him to show you where you can improve. If you’ve missed the mark, repent, and ask God to reveal anything you may have overlooked. Then, remember that you are forgiven through Jesus. Let go of any past guilt and thank God for the forgiveness He offers through His grace.
Bible Passage: Exodus 20 – The Ten Commandments
Part 1: The Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:1-17)
Read: Exodus 20:1-17
Summary: God speaks to the Israelites through Moses, giving them the Ten Commandments as a foundation for living in relationship with Him and each other.
Reflection Questions:
- Why do you think God gave these commandments?
- How does each commandment guide us in relating to God and others?
Application: Go through each of the Ten Commandments, asking God to help you live in a way that honors Him and shows love to those around you.
Part 2: The People’s Response (Exodus 20:18-21)
Read: Exodus 20:18-21
Summary: When God appears in thunder, lightning, and smoke, the Israelites are overwhelmed with fear and ask Moses to speak to God for them. Moses reassures them that this fear will help them avoid sin. Moses acts as a mediator between God and the people, pointing toward Jesus, who would become our ultimate mediator.
Reflection Questions:
- Why were the people so afraid when they saw God’s presence?
- How does Moses as a mediator foreshadow Jesus’ role for us?
Application: Because Jesus is our mediator, we can come to God with confidence. Take a moment to thank God for His mercy and for sending Jesus to make it possible to draw close to Him.
Key Themes of Exodus 20:
- God’s Holiness: The Ten Commandments reflect God’s standards for holiness and justice.
- Right Relationships: These commandments show us how to honor God, respect others, and live truthfully.
- Jesus as Mediator: Moses served as a mediator, just as Jesus allows us to approach God freely.
Suggested Prayer: “Lord, thank You for Your Word and for guiding me through the Ten Commandments. Help me to live in a way that honors You and shows Your love to others. Thank You for sending Jesus to be my mediator, making it possible for me to come close to You. Amen.”
Memory Verse:
“You shall have no other gods before Me.” —Exodus 20:3
This verse reminds us to keep God first in everything, making sure nothing else takes His place in our hearts.
Declaration for Exodus 20: "I declare that I will honor God, keeping His commandments in my heart and actions. I will put God first, speak truthfully, and treat others with respect and kindness. With His strength, I will live with integrity. Thank You, Jesus, for being my mediator, bringing me close to God and allowing me to live in His grace."
